FILM

Betty Garrett, a prominent actress in MGM musicals, Broadway productions and television shows, died on Saturday, Feb. 12 at age 91. Best known for playing Edna Babish on "Laverne & Shirley" and Irene Lorenzo on "All in the Family," Garrett also acted with Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra in the musicals "On the Town" and "Take Me Out to the Ball Game." Garrett is also well-known for singing the song "Baby, It's Cold Outside" with Red Skelton in "Neptune's Daughter."

MUSIC

The 53rd annual Grammy Awards were held on Sunday, Feb. 13 in Los Angeles at Staples Center. Lady Gaga made a memorable arrival inside a giant egg and won Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for "Bad Romance," Best Short Form Music for "Bad Romance" and Best Pop Vocal Album for "The Fame Monster." Lesser-known indie rock band Arcade Fire won Album of the Year with "The Suburbs." Country group Lady Antebellum's song "Need You Now" was named Song of the Year and Record of the Year.  

DANCE

"Live to Dance," a dance competition television show that premiered on Jan. 4, chose its first winners this month. The show awarded $500,000 to D'Angelo Castro, age 9, and Amanda Carbajales, age 10, for their excellence in ballroom dancing. The show has garnered much attention, with Paula Abdul as lead judge and Andrew Günsberg as host.

LITERATURE

The Jewish Book Council recently announced finalists for the Sami Rohr Prize for Jewish literature. This year's finalists are Allison Amend, Nadia Kalman, Julie Orringer, Austin Ratner and Joseph Skibell. The winner will receive $100,000, while the runner-up will receive $25,000. The awards ceremony will occur in New York on May 31.
