PHOTOGRAPHY

South African photographer Jodi Bieber recently won the 2010 World Press Photo Award for her portrait of a disfigured Afghan woman named Bibi Aisha. Although Aisha's nose and ears were cut off as punishment for running from her abusive in-laws, Bieber chose to capture Aisha as a striking beauty rather than a victim. The photo was featured on the cover of Time magazine last year.

Perry Moore, author of "Hero" and executive producer of "The Chronicles of Narnia" movie series, died last Thursday at the age of 39. "Hero," a novel about a gay teenage superhero, won the Lambda Literary Award for the best LGBT Children's/Young Adult novel in 2008. Moore's nonfiction "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe: The Official Illustrated Movie Companion" was also on the New York Times paperback bestseller list.

DANCE

The Merce Cunningham Dance Company, founded by avant-garde dancer and choreographer Merce Cunningham, will disband after the two-year Legacy Tour's final performance on New Year's Eve this year in New York City. The company, consisting of dancers who studied directly under Cunningham, will perform 18 works on the tour in over 40 cities around the world.  Cunningham received many prestigious awards during his lifetime, including the National Medal of Arts, the MacArthur Fellowship and the British Laurence Olivier Award, and heavily influenced modern dance. He died in 2009 in New York City.

THEATER

The Metropolitan Opera announced plans to incorporate 3-D projections in Richard Wagner's "Siegfried" opera, which will first be performed at the Met on Oct. 27. Audience members need not wear 3-D glasses and will see singers interacting with the 3-D scenery. Réalisations, the company that developed the technology for the 3-D projections, plans to use its technology for Cirque du Soleil shows as well.
