"Community," an NBC comedy about an eclectic study group at Greendale Community College began its second season on Thursday as part of NBC's packed Thursday night line-up.

Season one of "Community" was a surprise to fans.  Although the show had a rocky start, leaving many wondering whether the plot would be humorous or merely follow the advances of the fast-talking former lawyer, Jeff (Joel McHale), toward the beautiful but neurotic Britta (Gillian Jacobs), "Community" came together mid-season.  Fans grew to love the eclectic group of characters, from the recently divorced, middle-aged mother to the high school football star. Last season ended with Britta confessing her love to Jeff, Pierce (Chevy Chase) offering housing to Troy (Donald Glover) and a surprising romantic development between Jeff and Annie (Alison Brie).

Betty White starred in the first episode of the new season as the eccentric Professor June Bauer, an anthropology professor with an obsession for weaponry.  White's appearance on the show surely marks an attempt by NBC to boost the show's popularity.  These efforts will prove especially important now that the show shares a time spot with the popular CBS comedy, "The Big Bang Theory."  Other efforts to boost the show's popularity include the promise of an animated stop-motion Christmas special by creator Dan Harmon, which will be done in clay-mation, in the style of the Rankin/Bass Christmas movies.

The second season of "Community" will also feature guest appearances from Drew Carey, as Jeff's former boss, as well as Rob Corddry as Jeff's former best friend, who attempts to bring Jeff back to the law firm where they used to work.  Returning characters include Starburns (Dino Stamatopoulos), the eccentric student with sideburns shaped like stars, and Señor Chang (Ken Jeong), the Spanish professor who was stripped of his position during season one due to his lack of teaching qualifications. Although neither Shirley (Yvette Nicole Brown) nor Abed (Danny Pudi) played significant roles in the first episode, fans can be sure that they will be featured again soon.

The show's premiere on Thursday hints at a promising second season, as character dynamics continue to develop. The study group may have a new member—Señor Chang, now a student, has proven himself eager to join the team.  The changing relationship between Pierce and Troy promises to be intriguing now that the two very different men are living together. Romantic developments between the characters are also promising. Although the season premiere seemed to include a resolution of the love triangle between Jeff, Annie and Britta, it is clear that these three are not through with each other. Fans can look forward to significant changes in the relationships, especially because of the new tension between Annie and Britta.

Its sharp wit and hilarious portrayal of life at a community college make "Community" a must-see.

"Community" airs every Thursday at 8/9c on NBC.
