From Wellesley Student to Full-Time Activist: Changing Conceptions of Diversity to Include Mixed-Race Identity

  • Pendleton Atrium at 5 p.m.

The Division of Student Life will present a lecture by Jen Chau ’99, the Founder and Executive Director of Swirl, Inc., for the latest installment in the Multicultural Speaker Series Wellesley Women in the World. Swirl is a national multi-ethnic organization changing conceptions of race through community building, education, and action.

Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Panel

  • Location TBA at 7 p.m.

Wellesley for Equality, Wellesley College Democrats, and Wellesley College Republicans will host a panel discussion on the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. The panel will include Prof. Stacie Goddard, of Wellesley College, Prof. Harvey Sapolsky of MIT, and Korrie Xavier, a current Davis Scholar who was discharged from the Navy under “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

Asian American Film Festival

  • Collins Cinema at 7 p.m.

The Wellesley Asian Alliance will screen an award-winning autobiographical documentary about a Cambodian American who grew up in Texas and her later return to Cambodia.

Community Organizing, the Struggle for Equity, and Justice in Education

  • PNE 239 from 5-6:30 p.m.

Mark Warren, of the Harvard Graduate School of Education, will discuss education reform and how people unite across socio-economic borders to enact political change.

Thursday, Nov. 19

Bringing Stem Cell Research to the Bedside: Breaking the Traditional Mold

  • SCI 278 at 6:30 p.m.

Han Lee, the first person to graduate with a Ph.D. and MBA from Yale’s Ph.D./MBA program will discuss his research concerning hemotopoietic stem cells and his graduate school experience.

Searching for the Politics of Hip-Hop

  • PNE Atrium at 5:30 p.m.

Professor Jeffries will review the myriad ways that hip-hop and politics are discussed by people in the field and present research from his current book project on how discourses of race and gender interact with the notions of hip-hop identity, aesthetics, and political consciousness. RSVP to “CPLA Pizza Lunch RSVP” by Nov. 18 for a Lemon Thai dinner.

Brandeis Wellesley Orchestra Concert

  • Houghton Memorial Chapel at 8:00 p.m.

The Brandeis Wellesley Orchestra, conducted by Neal Hampton, will perform Mendelssohn Piano Concerto No. 1 in G minor, op. 25; the Hebrides Overture, op. 26; and Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 2, “The Little Russian,” op. 17 in C minor.
