What did you choose to do after graduating high school?
I graduated from high school in 2004. Originally, I was going to go to Art School at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston for painting. And while I was very excited about that opportunity, I felt another option slowly entering the picture.
My older brother and many of my friends joined a volunteer organization called the Special Task Force. This organization is connected to my church and is a faith-based leadership opportunity. We fundraise to sustain ourselves, travel and sight-see, hold team-building and leadership training workshops and activities, and create service projects at churches and inner cities across the country. So I decided to take a break and travel with the STF.
Why did you choose to volunteer instead of attending a traditional university?
I felt that this was a good decision for me because many of us don’t really know what we want to do or study at 18 years of age, and college can be very expensive. I wanted to take
some time to get to know myself better, discover who I am and establish some clear goals for myself, grow up, see and world, and have some experiential learning experiences.
How did you end up choosing to attend Wellesley?
I went to a community college in New York when I came back for two years and did very well there. Last May, I received my associate’s degree and decided I want to challenge myself even more by applying to a rigorous and prestigious school. Wellesley’s mantra is: powerful women who will do something in the world! That is exactly what I was looking for!
I love to challenge myself and to be around like-minded people is exciting and would be a good environment for me as well. It would enable me to make the right connections to move up in the world and therefore potentially make a greater impact in whatever I studied.
