Blue Pride Recap 3/30/2011

SOFTBALL

The Blue met with Wheaton College in their double-header NEWMAC opener. Wheaton won the first game 3-0. Wellesley came back in the second game in the afternoon and picked up a 7-6 win.  In the first game
Lauren Goldfarb '13 suffered the loss, striking out four and walking five but not allowing an earned run.  Wellesley finished with four errors. In the second game the roles were reversed, as all but one of the Blue's seven runs were unearned.
An RBI by Sara Del Balzo '14 got Wellesley on the board in the third inning. Then a three-run homerun from Brittany Bakacs '11 in the next inning made the score 4-3.  Megan Townsend '11 added an RBI triple to make the lead 5-3.
After Wheaton cut Wellesley's lead down to one run, the Blue had a pair of unearned runs in the seventh to cap their scoring at 7-4.  Del Balzo, Jayne Ellis '14 and Rachel Harris '14 had two hits apiece and Goldfarb earned the win.  She allowed four earned runs on seven hits.

LACROSSE

The Blue enjoyed a win over Mount Holyoke, scoring 12-7. The Blue now stand with a record of 6-1 overall. Meredith Roy '12 scored three goals, while Allison Robbins '13, Jenny Holland '11, Britt Msisz '14 and Kate Lonergan '14 had two goals each. Elizabeth Clementson '13 contributed a goal as well, and Alyssa Andres '13, Holland, Mscisz and Robbins each added assists to the win. Kayla Bolton '12 made a solid contribution with two game-highs of five ground balls and five draw controls. Also for the Blue, Roy and Andres each posted two caused turnovers, with Roy also recording four ground balls. Mary Mattia '11 made eight saves in net to earn the win.  Wellesley ended the game with a 25-18 advantage in shots and a 21-17 lead in ground balls and 12-9 in draw controls.

TENNIS

The Blue triumphed in a 5-4 match against Luther College in Kissimmee, FL. Wellesley is ranked 12th in the Northeast Region and moves to 10-3 overall. Kendall Tada '14 and Erica Choo '14 in the number three spot combined for an 8-6 win over Cass Chalhoub and Katy Lindstrom. In the number one spot, Jacqueline Shen '11 and Marie Watanabe '12 suffered an 8-5 defeat, and Nathalie Herman '11 and Diana Granger '14 lost 8-5.

However, the Blue quickly came back when Shen defeated her opponent in the two spot 2-6, 6-1, 10-1. Granger won her match 6-1, 6-1. Watanabe had a 6-3, 6-0 victory at number one. Erica Choo then clinched the win for the Blue with a 4-6, 6-2, 10-8 win at the number three spot.
